Disability Services FAQ’s

When should I contact ACU’s Disability Services Department about my disability?

Students with a documented disability who believe they require accommodation(s) should self-identify and submit an Accommodations Request and Documentation Form as promptly as possible to avoid delays. Accommodations cannot be implemented without approval from Disability Services. Accommodations are not retroactive. No other person(s) may request accommodations for the adult student. Adult students may not designate a person/surrogate to participate with Disability Services on their behalf.

Do I still have to apply for accommodation(s) if I had an IEP, 504 or previous accommodation plan?

Yes! The adult student MUST self-identify and submit an Accommodations Request and Documentation Form, and provide documentation of the disability provided by a licensed medical provider. A student may submit a copy of a previous IEP, 504 or accommodation plan, but it is not required, and it may not be considered sufficient documentation by itself when reviewed.

What documentation must I submit to request accommodation(s)?

1. Current (not to exceed one year), dated and signed on official letterhead from the professional/ institution/ organization.
2. Provided by a qualified healthcare professional such as a diagnosing or current physician, psychiatrist, or psychologist. Please note: a school-based Eligibility Report/ IEP/504 Plan can additionally be submitted as documentation of historical accommodation(s) but may not solely be considered.
3. Include a specific diagnosis or description of the disability.
4. Description of all current functional limitations due to the disability which may prevent the student’s ability to meet class requirements or participate in other ACU activities.
5. A complete description of the suggested accommodations that your qualified healthcare professional feels may aid in the classroom/university environment.

Incomplete or inadequate documentation will be returned. ACU reserves the right to verify all professional documentation and determine reasonable accommodation for any disability, including learning disabilities. All costs associated with obtaining and providing the required professional documentation are the responsibility of the student.

Will I receive the same accommodations that I previously received?

Students should not assume that previous accommodations will be approved. College course expectations and objectives differ from those of high school or other institutions, and therefore, accommodations previously awarded may not be approved. ACU provides reasonable accommodation(s) to reduce a barrier related to equal access. Disability Services cannot approve accommodations that fundamentally alter/modify a course, content, objective, degree program, or that may cause undue financial/administrative burden.
