The Department of Business Administration at Arizona Christian University continues to push forward with a bold vision: preparing principled, highly qualified organizational leaders who live out a biblical worldview in every sphere of society. That mission shapes everything the department does, including its commitment to innovative, experiential learning that goes far beyond the classroom.
One of the most meaningful expressions of that commitment is the department’s mentorship program, piloted each fall in the Business Capstone course. The experience pairs soon-to-be graduates with seasoned Christian business leaders who walk with them through the transition from college to career.
A Hands-On Approach to Leadership Development
Each student in the course is matched with a mentor who meets with them several times throughout the semester, both virtually and in person. The program begins with orientation and expectations led by Dr. Ryan Lunsford, Department Chair and Professor. From there, mentors and mentees work through a blend of formal assignments, informal conversations, and real-world professional development strategies.
Monthly checkpoints create accountability, but every mentoring relationship has the freedom to focus on what each student needs most. Whether it is sharpening resumes, discussing calling and career direction, or navigating workplace culture from a biblical perspective, students receive guidance that is both practical and spiritually grounded.
The impact of the program extends beyond conversation. Last fall, an anonymous mentor donated funds to send two mentees to the Arizona Christian Business Connection Conference in Scottsdale. There, students networked with Christian leaders and saw firsthand what it looks like to lead with conviction in today’s business world.
The semester concludes with a group luncheon where mentors and mentees reflect on their growth. Some share professional breakthroughs. Others talk about spiritual clarity and renewed purpose. Every year, the stories point to the same truth: intentional mentorship changes lives.
Student Stories
Hailey Duncan, ACU Graduate
“My experience in the business mentorship program at ACU was truly transformative, both professionally and spiritually. The program connected students with local Christian business leaders who demonstrated how to transform business culture with biblical truth. My mentor, Bonnie Mock, was nothing short of exceptional. Her wisdom, spiritual insight, and commitment to Christ helped shape my career path and strengthened my walk with the Lord. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this program.”
William Chambers
“I was blessed by my meetings with Mike Stanley last fall. I came in unsure of my career path. Mike helped me refine my resume and encouraged me as I began networking. His feedback and insight made a huge difference as I started thinking seriously about my future.”
Spencer Cox
“Taking part in the Business Mentorship Program was truly an honor. I enjoyed getting to know my mentor and having someone who gave solid advice and listened to all my questions. It was a great experience, and I highly recommend it to anyone who has the chance to participate.”
Mentor Perspectives
Bonnie Mock, Local Christian Business Leader, The Crowning LLC
“As I got to know Hailey, I was able to confidently give her a reference when she applied for a job. I studied the company for two days and wrote the CEO about the ways she would be an asset. She earned the job on her own merits, but the process reminded me how important it is to know the heart of your mentee. Look beyond skill. Discern by the Holy Spirit the person God has assigned to you to mentor. I believe Dr. Lunsford was led by the Lord when pairing mentors and students.”
Brent Veach, ACU Board of Trustees & Del Taco Franchise Owner
“It was a great experience getting to know Spencer, one of our Firestorm linemen. It helped me reconnect with the realities of college life, including the challenges students face today. The experience made me a better Trustee with a deeper student-focused perspective. I would gladly do it again.”
Shaping Leaders for Ministry and Industry
The mentorship program is one piece of a broader strategy in the Business Department: combining academic excellence, experiential learning, and intentional discipleship. With tools like multi-round business simulations and on-site consultancy projects already in place, mentorship adds a personal layer that helps students step confidently into the next season of life.
Every conversation, every meeting, and every prayer shared between mentors and mentees helps equip the next generation of courageous, biblically grounded professionals who will influence workplaces, communities, and industries for Christ.
If this is the kind of hands-on, spiritually rich education that inspires you, ACU’s Business Department is ready to help you take your next step, whether it is as a mentor to one of our students or you are interested in pursuing your degree, reach out to Dr. Ryan Lunsford to get started.
