When asked what was the greatest commandment, Jesus taught his followers to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and all your strength.”

Then, he added, “Love your neighbor as yourself”.

On Saturday, April 13th, ACU students put Jesus’ words into action by serving those in need with friends from Unite Phoenix.

Unite Phoenix’s mission is to gather followers of Jesus to care for the poor, broken and lost men, women and children of our community.  At the “serve day” organized by Unite Phoenix, ACU students joined with other members of the community to serve at one of five Christ-centered inner city non-profits. They had the opportunity to teach English to refugees from third world nations, offer courage and hope to senior citizens struggling with homelessness, and to share the gospel with inner-city children and their parents.

One student, freshman Lyrah Panarigan, who served refugees with an organization called Hope Response said this about her experience:

“Serving with Hope Response through Unite Phoenix was an unforgettable experience. It was amazing to see God move within the hearts of the little kids as we shared the Gospel, and afterwards many little hands were raised to receive Jesus in their hearts. Having the opportunity to serve alongside my friends was definitely a blessing and something that I want to do more often!”

After hearing the Gospel and testimonies of the students and other volunteers, several children and one of their mothers accepted Christ!

We are blessed that ACU students desire to be the hands and feet of Jesus in our local community. Together, they provide a living testimony to Christ’s teaching to “love your neighbor as yourself.”
