Arizona Christian University celebrated 116 spring graduates on Saturday, May 6 at the institution’s 55th Commencement Ceremony, which included an address on humility from Alliance Defending Freedom CEO Michael Farris and a “charge” from ACU President Len Munsil. More than 2,000 people attended the event at Bethany Bible Church in Phoenix, watching ACU’s largest graduating classes walk across the stage to be awarded diplomas in 12 degree programs. Including December graduates, 144 students earned degrees from ACU this academic year – only four years ago did ACU surpass 100 graduates for the first time.

The ACU Chorale performed throughout the program, sharing its musical talent in a prelude concert, the Star-Spangled Banner, and the singing of “To God Be the Glory.” Members of the Class of 2017 played key roles by offering the Invocation (Andres Marrufo), a reading from the New Testament (Crystal Decknick), and Benediction (Bryan Stephens). Farris, President and CEO of ADF and Chancellor Emeritus at Patrick Henry College, spoke to the Class of 2017 on the importance of possessing humility, stating “Humility is the path that will take you from the potential for accomplishment into actually achieving great things. A humble person realizes he or she is part of a greater body,” as described in Romans 12:3-8. President Len Munsil delivered the “charge” to the graduates declaring, “you are grounded in the truth of God, you have the answers that are needed, you have light for this present darkness in our culture, you speak life and hope and healing to those around you, you are equipped as teachers and preachers and counselors and healers and entrepreneurs and musicians and policymakers and artists and writers and you are filled up to bursting with the love of God.”

He concluded, “We’ve watched you grow, gain confidence, build spiritual muscle … You are ready to engage, you are poised to influence… You are just what we need today in the body of Christ – confident, courageous, capable, committed — you are the answers to our prayers for an awakening, for a generation that will rise up and be salt and light, and be transformational leaders who guide our culture toward biblical truth.” The graduating class was also honored at Friday evening’s Senior Celebration and Dessert Reception on ACU’s campus. Graduates from each degree program, in both the traditional and Degree Completion Program (DCP), were awarded Outstanding Student Awards for their academic and athletic talent, character, and faith.
